John Sperry- Outside/Folk Art
Born in 1956, John Sperry is a self-taught artist who first encountered folk art in an Atlanta shop. He felt that the work he saw conveyed such a great amount of feeling through its fun, free-form style that he was inspired to go home and begin painting again for the first time since his childhood. These paintings of his almost immediately attracted an audience and three months after he started painting, he quit his corporate job to pursue painting full-time.
Sperry's work is done primarily with acrylic on old roofing tin and his images are colorful and whimsical depictions of the rural south, musicians, animals, flowers, and other flights of fancy. Sperry currently lives in a turn-of-the-century farmhouse in rural Georgia with his wife where they can create and appreciate a simpler way of life.
