Jim Lewis - Folk Art
From Kentucky, Jim Lewis is a gifted self-taught artist that is widely collected nationally and internationally. Working mostly with basswood, maple, and acrylic paint, he has created and continues to create a wondrous parade of biblical characters, mermaids, animals, fish, and other creatures.
Lewis worked as an operator of heavy machinery at a strip mine until he was laid off in the late eighties. Jim’s neighbor, Minnie Adkins, the grand dame of painted wood carvings, introduced him to the world of folk art. Having carved a bit as a hobby, he started making art full time and channeled his fertile imagination and talent as a wood worker into his own special brand of folk carvings.
